Florida Statewide Organization History

The Florida Statewide Organization (FSO) of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. represents more than 2,000 members across 45 chapters within the 7th District (AL, FL, GA, MS), promoting brotherhood, scholarship, and community service. Founded shortly after the establishment of the first Florida chapter in 1925, the FSO coordinates statewide workshops and youth leadership programs aimed at strengthening communities.

Key Historical and Organizational Highlights:

  • Founding Chapter: The inaugural Florida chapter, Theta Phi, was established in Jacksonville on May 11, 1925, by Brother W.W. Blocker, along with Brothers W.A. Busch, G.H. Leggett, R.L. Brown, and J.A. Thomas.
  • Growth: The Upsilon Psi Chapter was chartered at Florida A&M University (FAMU) on May 13, 1932, under the leadership of Dr. Henry Manning Efferson.
  • Organizational Framework: As part of the 7th District, Florida has been at the forefront of adopting data-driven membership management and modern registration methods. The FSO is governed by a State Representative and an executive administrative team.
  • Community Engagement: The FSO emphasizes social action, organizing initiatives such as the Florida Youth Virtual Leadership Conference, and upholds the fraternity’s core principles: Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift.
  • Leadership Legacy: The 25th FSO State Representative administration continues a tradition of strong leadership, with past leaders including Brothers Robert “Bob” Porter, Leslie Gamble, William Bartley, Bobby Harper, and Anthony Brown.

Since 1974, the FSO remains dedicated to fostering brotherhood while actively contributing to impactful service and philanthropic efforts throughout Florida.
